Maxi Taxi Regulations

Applying for a Taxi-Driver's Badge & Taxi Driver's License

Applicants for a taxi driving permit must successfully satisfy the following criteria:

1. National identification (National Identification card, current Driving Permit or valid Passport) proving the driver is aged 21 years or over;
2. Completed application Form No. 4, available at Licensing Authority’s offices;
3. Certificate of character from the Commissioner of Police;
4. Three (3) recent passport size photographs;
5. Valid Class 3 (Light Motor Vehicle) Driver’s Permit and driving experience of at least one (1) year and;
6. Completed Form No. 12 “Medical test for Driver’s Permit” for which an applicant must produce a recent passport size photograph prior to application if applicable.

Associated fees for applying for a Taxi Driving Permit

Renewing of a Taxi Driver's Badge & Driving Permit

Applicants must produce the following documents to successfully apply for a renewal of their taxi driving permit: 

  1. Completed application Form No. 4 (available at the Transport Division Offices);
  2. Certificate of Character from the Commissioner of Police;
  3. Three (3) recent passport size photographs;
  4. Completed Form No. 12 – “Medical Test for Driver’s Permit “for which an applicant must produce a recent passport size photograph prior to application, if applicable;
  5. Valid Driver’s Permit;
  6. Their expired Taxi Drivers Badge and Driving Permit to submit to the Licensing Office;
  7. A one-time payment of forty ($40.00) dollars.

Fees for Replacement of a Taxi Badge & Taxi Driving Permit

  1. If the taxi badge and driving permit are within the period of validity, and this is a first application for a replacement, a fee of forty (40) dollars is applicable.
  2. If the taxi badge and driving permit are within the period of validity and the application is for another replacement of the taxi driving permit subsequent to the first one, a fee of one hundred (100) dollars is applicable.

Replacing your Taxi Driver's Badge & Driving Permit

An application for the replacement of lost or stolen Taxi Badges and Driving Permits can be done at all offices of Licensing Authority’s Transport Division excluding the St. James Office.

Applicants must produce the following for successful replacement of their taxi driving permit: 

  1. Evidence by a police report indicating that the Taxi Driver’s Badge has been lost, stolen or damaged;
  2. Completed application Form No. 4 (available at Transport Division Offices);
  3. Certificate of Character from Commissioner of Police;
  4. Three (3) recent passport size photographs;
  5. A completed Form No. 12 “Medical Test for Driver’s Permit” for which an applicant must produce a recent passport size photograph prior to application, if applicable; and
  6. Evidence of holding a valid Driving Permit.

Ownership of Maxi Taxi Services

The Applicants must produce the following documents:

  1. Fill out form to own Maxi Taxi (Form 1a);
  2. Produce Certificate of Character;
  3. A completed Affidavit as provided on Form and sworn before Commissioner of Affidavit or Justice of the Peace;
  4. Submit forms, driving permit and taxi badge to the Maxi Taxi Section;
  5. Pay applicant fee to cashier;
  6. Schedule an appointment for an interview;
  7. If interview is successful, a permit to own Maxi Taxi is issued;
  8. A fee of one hundred (100.00) dollars is to be paid.

Maxi Taxi Operator's Permit

The applicants must produce the following documents to successfully qualify for and be issued a maxi taxi operator’s driving permit: –

  1. Complete form to operate Maxi Taxi (form 1b);
  2. A completed Affidavit provided on Form and swear to declaration before Commissioner of Affidavit or Justice of The Peace;
  3. Submit a Certificate of Character from the Police along with driving permit, taxi badge and form to the Maxi Taxi section;
  4. Pay appointment fee to cashier;
  5. Make appointment for the interview;
  6. If interview is successful, the maxi taxi operator’s driving permit is issued;
  7. A one-time fee of one hundred (100.00) dollars is to be paid.

For More information on the Amendments to the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, please visit the Ministry’s website – www.mowt.gov.tt and click on MVRT Act Chapter 48 50 tab.

Remember, to avoid a traffic ticket and demerit points simply obey the road traffic laws. Do not act contrary to the law outlined in the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act Chapter 48:50.
