Registration of Motor Vehicles

No person shall be registered as owner of a Motor Vehicle unless such person is at least seventeen (17) years of age. In order to register as the legal owner of a motor vehicle, the owner or agent must present the following: 

  • a) A pro forma Invoice issued by the motor car firm
  • b) Completed Motor Vehicle Tax Form (issued by the motor car firm)
  • c) Completed Registration Form No. 6
  • d) Certificate of Insurance

On the payment of Motor Vehicle Tax where applicable and Registration fee, a registration number is then issued.

Registration of Foreign - Used vehicle

For successful registration of foreign used vehicles, an applicant(s) must produce the following:

  1. Receipt of Duty payment – Original;
  2. C82 Form – Original;
  3. Bill of Landing (BL) – Copy;
  4. Commercial Invoice – Copy;
  5. CARICOM Invoice – Copy;
  6. Cancellation Certificate – Copy;
  7. English Translation – Original and Copy;
  8. TTBS Inspection – Original;
  9. Import License – Copy;
  10. Registration Form;
  11. One (1) Copy of Customer’s Driver’s’ Permit.

Change of Registration of a Motor Vehicle

In the event the owner of a hired car, goods vehicle or rented car wishes to change its registration, the following steps shall be taken:

  1. The motor vehicle must be licensed for the current year in the original class.
  2. Approval for the change must be sought from Commissioner of Inland Revenue in writing if the vehicle is less than (5) years and be accompanied by a certified copy of registration which shall not be more than three years old (except for rented cars)

The vehicle must be presented to the Transport Division for inspection and the following documents produced:

  1. Purchase tax receipt from the Inland Revenue Department (except for rented cars);
  2. Form of approval from the Inland Revenue Department (with the exception of rented cars);
  3. Certified Copy of Registration;
  4. Completed Registration Form No. 6;
  5. Completed Notification of Change Form;
  6. Valid Certificate of Insurance.

When the vehicle has been certified roadworthy by the Licensing Authority the following fees shall be paid:
Notification of Change Fee – $100.00

Amendments to the Motor Vehicle Register Notification of Change of the following particulars

  1. Colour /Engine Number
  2. Chassis Number
  3. Name (by Marriage, Affidavit or Deed Poll)
  4. Address

Remember, to avoid a traffic ticket and demerit points simply obey the road traffic laws. Do not act contrary to the law outlined in the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act Chapter 48:50.
